I recently was in Toronto for a unconference with Mozilla. During that whole week I spend a lot of time with the Drift Zero and created a lot of mixes. Some were really good, others less so.

A few stood out, which I needed to half redo because of a few mistakes with the volume and needing to stop the recording for reasons…

I have been listening to this mix over and over again recently and it seriously rocks with a number of classic Techtrance tunes mixed in with a bunch of new tunes I recently got my hands on.

So with that I present the Glaciers and Borealis mix (KEF/Iceland > YYZ/Canada).

Embarrassing time to update to Ubuntu 26.04.1

When I bought my Framework 13 laptop while leaving BBC R&D, I was so excited to set it up I failed to add LUKS disk encryption to the system. I knew I should but thought I can do it later… (big mistake)

So 1.5 years later, having dismissing the task to add disk encryption over and over again; then wondering if I should move the to do date closer while traveling across international borders. Then finally deciding to do it when Ubuntu 26.04 comes out but then having to wait for the point release…

Finally I did it!

My wayland keyboard problem was so ingrained into my finger tips than even now I press shift+2 to get “quote marks.” (When I logged in to Ubuntu with Wayland, which became the default last year instead of X11; my UK keyboard would be set to US key mapping).

I told myself I would wait for the latest Ubuntu 26.04, then upgrade and if it broke the system start again fresh. I did the upgrade and it worked. But that left me with the issue that I needed to add encryption! I loaded up Gparted live but decided since I already copied everything I should do a complete clean install (especially because the US key-mapping persisted!).

Reinstalling while jet-lagged and my internet was out was a bad idea!

I just came back from the Mozilla-alumni in Toronto (it was incredible and I remember how much I like Toronto). Was pretty badly jet-lagged (always was going west to east) and didn’t sleep for over 26 hours. Then a long time ago I considered switching my fibre internet to a business level but the date had come up sooner than expected. I agreed to everything but when I saw the contract was for 36 months! I didn’t sign and return the doc. However on Monday they moved me over and closed my old consumer connection! (I am considering this should be an complaint I raise…)

I tried to call them but ultimately they had closed my consumer account and the change back would be a new connection!

The next day sat in a coffee shop, I got a phone call with a deal. It was ok but nothing more than expected. Finally the internet was back and finally I could do everything at home.

This all happened when access to my multiple emails was pretty important.

I certainly pick my moments!!!

But at least now I have a UK keyboard mapping attached to my UK keyboard and I finally got rid of my BBC R&D configs and legacy projects. Although I am wondering if I should have used the hardware option?

Olympics woman’s football: Canada vs Team USA

Canada vs Team USA Woman's Semi-Finals in Football

Congrats to the Woman’s Team of USA, as they won the London 2012 Olympics football.

I had the pleasure of watching Canada vs Team USA in Manchester Utd’s Old Trafford stadium.

Thrilling game ended in the last minute of extra time 4 goals to 3.

I was cheering for Canada but what surprised me was how dirty this football match was. Quite a few tackles were missed and I’m really surprised no one got sent off.

It was a excellent experience and I finally got a chance to see Old Trafford from the inside. Good stuff for £20 and a seat with no leg room. Really felt like London 2012 Olympics was a good thing that day…

Sicko – the Universial Heath care question

So I just returned from watching Sicko in a Canadian Cinema (don't you know).

The experience was quite different. Although watching from the outside looking in on this massive problem the united states has with its self was the same, you certainly got the feeling that Canadians were shocked at how bad the problem really was.

Micheal Moore this time around does a fantastic job not getting too muddled in the politics and conspiracy areas. Instead uses peoples stories to tell how bad things have got. Even if the stories stretch the truth, they were powerful enough to cast a couple of tears from peoples eyes. Micheal looks at the Canadian, British, French systems, but what really hammer the point home is the visit to Cuba with some 911 helpers. Micheal Moore is a genius for that one which looked to be a stunt too far turned into something very meaningful. The Cheque for the Anti Micheal Moore site owner was clever but could been seen as another stunt or a act of humanity. I thought humanity but I could see how others would think the opposite.

The movie is well worth watching even if you can't stand Micheal Moore. I went to the cinema because I want to support Micheal Moore's efforts in this one but you can also get the film online if you don't like the guy.

A Holiday in Toronto, Canada

Canada is one of those places I've always wanted to check out since I was young. Well now I'm off to check out Toronto, which just had a heatwave and would you believe it, its Canada day on 1st July. Now if someone would give me a iphone to smash, I would be very happy… (wink)

This obviously means blogging will either slow down or speed up depending on what I do while I'm in Toronto. Oh if your in Toronto and would like to meetup, please drop me a comment or email. I checked upcoming and eventful and theres little on it would seem.

The Corporation available for free, but is it remixable?

From Torrent freak, which I've been meaning to blog for a while…

The award winning Canadian documentary The Corporation has been released on BitTorrent for free. Filmmaker Mark Achbar just released an updated official torrent of it. Everyone is free to download, watch, discuss, and share it. Although the torrent download is free, the filmmakers encourage people to donate a small fee if they like what they see. We asked Mark Achbar how the first round of donations went. He said, since my initial torrent launch of The Corporation at the end of August, there have been $635.00 in contributions. They ranged from $2 to three very generous gifts of $100 each. All are very much appreciated. He added, my only regret is that I didnt put up my own torrent sooner.

Although this is great stuff, I couldn't find the licence anywhere. So I'm assuming its downloadable, sharable but not remixable? Shame because its a great documentary but I would like to see a slightly shorter version which I could lend to some friends without them falling a sleep. You could easily do a 1hour version which gets the core message across and then the 3hour version full of examples and more depth.
