I have Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop but I’ve added Gnome 3 and ditched Unity by adding repositories which have Gnome3. Everything kind of works but there are problems as described before here.
So I was happy to see the Ubuntu Gnome Remix project is growing and has a couple of releases such as gNatty.
This all comes at a point when I’m seriously considering wiping my laptop drive and building a version of Ubuntu without Unity from the very start. Problem is I don’t really want to loose all the applications, preferences, etc, etc… So I’ll try and get Gnome3 fully working then maybe one day soon, just do the wipe. I am hoping Ubuntu allow Gnome3 to be a part of Ubuntu or allow such projects to grow and establish themselves.
UGR Linux won’t get out of Alpha and Beta versions for a few months yet. The UGR web site recommends not using UGR for a production box due to the list of known bugs at this stage. So I installed it on a test box yesterday to see what it was like.
First a fresh install of Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on an old Toshiba A200 notebook, followed by running the UGR installation instructions provided in the following link (http://ugr.teampr0xy.net/install). The install of Gnome 3 worked perfectly… although the downloads from the UGR repositories were rather slow – I suspect that maybe it was a transient fault on my ADSL connection.
So far I haven’t seen any errors. But I still wouldn’t recommend installing it on your production computer without doing a full backup of your /home directories.
I plan to join the UGR Testing Team and I’ll wait until UGT 1.0 comes out before I install it on my of my production boxes. I really like Ubuntu, but I just can’t get used to Unity – so Gnome 3 is my way ahead to stay on a Ubuntu based distro, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll go across to Kubuntu.
Regards,
Roy
Yeah I read the notes and am willing to give it a good old try. Can’t be much worst than I got right now. Got Gnome shell but somethings don’t work like Alt+Shift+Tab doesn’t work at all
Been thinking about Kubuntu too, but honestly I do also prefer Gnome3 even without the Compiz effects
